The American Flag and What It Means is a printable tabbed flip book designed for students in Grades 3–5. Through engaging informational passages, students explore the history behind the flag, the meaning of its stars, stripes, and colors, the people who have served under it, and the traditions surrounding the Pledge of Allegiance.

The finished book features seven easy-to-find tabs: Our Flag, The Stars, The Stripes, Red, White, Blue, and The Pledge. Each section pairs more substantial reading with four Think About It questions designed to encourage comprehension, reflection, and meaningful discussion.

Students will learn about topics including the original thirteen colonies, the evolution of the 50-star flag, Fort McHenry and The Star-Spangled Banner, courage at Normandy, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and traditions of respect surrounding the American flag.

The book concludes with a Closing Reflection that brings the lessons together and a My Promise activity students can sign and date, encouraging them to consider how they can demonstrate respect, gratitude, courage, integrity, and kindness in their own lives.
